I didn't get a post up the last couple of days. I was just too busy to get it done.

Got another short story in the Gods Above and Below series done. Cyrille had a very hard time and he was very cranky about being thrown into a muck-filled pit complete with a monster. But he won so it's okay.

Then I started a new one today but only got 700 words on it since I really wanted to get this week's story into POD format. Which I did. I did not get the Now Available post up for the week. I'll have to do that tomorrow.

My new Kobo arrived and it's lovely. Unfortunately, I realized as I was loading things onto it that I desperately need to go through the fanfic I have stored in Calibre. There's a ton of stuff that I no longer want or read. Plus there's a bunch of stuff that I need to reorganize like crazy. Project for the long weekend coming up, I suppose. But it will get me to download a bunch of my favorites from AO3 so that's good, I suppose. :D

Got my steps on Sunday and yesterday. Today, too. Didn't get them yesterday but that's okay. I've been doing better on the eating and I'm back at the exercises in the mornings so my legs and arms are a bit sore. Good sore. It's all good.

I'm going to be trying to make a DIY version of Lush's King of Skin this weekend, always provided my shea butter arrives in time. I love the stuff but damn it's expensive. If I manage to figure out an unscented version then I'll have an excuse to go buy essential oils to make scented ones. That's a good thing right there.

Goals for tomorrow including exercises, work, writing the rest of the latest short story (I want two more done before the end of the month), getting this week's story uploaded everywhere, getting the Now Available post up, and that's about it. More than enough for one day.

Off to bath and bed for me--goodnight everyone!

The Big Gay Fiction Giveaway is back! May 22-29, around 80 authors are giving away free books, short stories, chapters, and box sets.

It's run by Instafreebie, which means you give them an email address, they sign you up for a newsletter, and you get a DRM-free epub, mobi, or (sometimes) pdf sent to you. It's pretty painless except for all the newsletters you'll then belong to.

Too hot for a pussy hat? Try a pussy pin! Handmade felt is just the first step for these handmade artisanal beauties.

Pussy pin (ukulele not included)

The crafter sends all proceeds to Planned Parenthood, International. She says most people pay about $15.00 for each one. All I know is they're darned cute and as soon as she has more I'm getting one.

After all, my ukulele would look stunning in one.

Another Gods Above short story done!

Yay me! I started it today and finished it, too. Grand total of 4000 words. Xun solved a problem mostly by herself and found herself a little bit changed by it.

The hubby and I went for a bike ride today. Man, I can tell I've not been on a bike in ages. My legs and butt were not happy at all. Worse, it was aggravating my arms but so far they're okay. No flare up. I will be medicating to be sure that I don't flare. Can't afford that right now.

Dinner was pork country style ribs marinated in BBQ sauce with corn and German pretzels. Yummy and very easy to make. Which was good after the bike ride.

Goals for tomorrow include writing another short story (hopefully a full story), exercises, work and breakfast for dinner.

I'm off for meds, bath and bed--goodnight everyone!

Six Wakes

3/5. Locked spaceship mystery in which six clones wake up with missing memories on a generation ship lightyears from earth in the bloody wreckage of their prior deaths.

When I say that this book is "fun" and "a palate-cleanser" it should be understood that includes stabbings. Lots of stabbings. And six cagey, pissed off people running around an enclosed space alternately feeding and attempting to kill each other. There's this vague philosophical underbelly going on about the things you might expect – immortality and the ways it changes you – but let's be real, I was here for stabbings and plot twists and revenge schemes.

But I mostly wanted to talk about the fact that the author reads the commercial audio. This is a thing that is happening more often, and I get why it seems like a good idea. But you know what? Audio narration is a skill, and it takes practice, and probably also some innate talent. Mary Robinette Kowal has been doing it for a while, and she was pretty good reading her own stuff. Same with Emma Newman, who has extensive experience and who really knocked her own Planetfall out of the park (and who has the advantage of a lovely voice to work with). Lafferty does podcasts, but that really isn't the same thing as performative reading, and well. She's just not that good. She's also not bad, but she's a little affectless, a little forced. And this is how she'll get better, I guess, but it really pointed out how a mediocre narrator can make awkward writing truly thud. The dialogue in this book is, well. How do I put this? A really good, seasoned performer probably could have saved a lot of it with effort. Lafferty could not.

When the Moon Was Ours

2/5. A girl with a complicated past grows roses from a wound in her wrist; the local "witch" girls want the roses for their own ends.

Well, on the plus side, this is a great example of a book where representation works so much better when it's not done on the 'one and only' model. There are two trans characters in this book who are in very different places in re their identities, their bodies, and their transitions. And because there are two of them, it is so much easier to take each of them where they are, as a person, rather than – unfairly but inevitably – as some sort of comment on trans people in general, or transition in general, or or or.

On the other hand, this book is 70% symbolism by volume, with a plot tossed over top. These are not the proportions I like my fiction to have. I spent this whole book like, "Wait, that wasn't a metaphor, the pumpkin literally turned to glass? Oh-kay . . . what does that mean? What do the paper moons mean? What about the – oh, for fuck's sake."

Either this novel really ought to have been novelette length, at most, or it is so so so so not for me. Or both.

The [community profile] podficbigbang is back for Round 6! I have a few important announcements:

  1. Due to the difficulty in managing the challenge in multiple places at once and in recognition of recent mass exodus from LiveJournal, the challenge will only be operating on Dreamwidth going forward. My apologies to those of you who may be disappointed in this change.
  2. The Epic Podfic Big Bang will not be running this year. It's back to just the regular Podfic Big Bang with the usual requirement of 10,000 words. But that doesn't mean you can't shoot for an epic word count yourself!
  3. Since we'll be posting in October (my favorite time of the year), I've made the executive decision to name all things Autumn as the optional theme for the year. Behold my cosmic modly powers! Bring on the fallen leaves, harvest moon, pumpkin spice, and Halloween shenanigans. Interpret the theme as broadly or narrowly as you please or ignore it entirely.

Join the Podfic Big Bang today!

The Iron Hunt

3/5. Urban fantasy about the loner woman with demons who live in her tattoos trying to slot herself into a life with a partner and friends while the potential apocalypse comes.

Yeah, so, most people probably know Liu now through her comics, but I knew her from a long-ago series of recs from several different people that left me with the strong impression that she writes delightfully batshit stuff with, like, hot gargoyle-on-lady action. So I finally grabbed this book – being one of the few options available in audio – and. I am saddened to report there is no hot gargoyle-on-lady action here. I mean, it's nice? There's lots of plot and cool worldbuilding and oodles of backstory barely hinted at. And a central relationship that is established and quietly awesome (he's so respectful of her, it's actually confusing!)

So I went and looked at Liu's website and it turns out this series is listed as "urban fantasy," and she has another series listed as "paranormal romance" which I suspect is what was recced to me.

And here's my question: why oh why oh why can't I have lots of plot and worldbuilding and interesting backstory and hot gargoyle-on-lady action? This does not seem so hard!*

And yet. Genre rules, kids.

*Aside from the gargoyle dick.

I managed to get 2200 words written on it, mostly because work was very, very slow today and the boss left early. So I wrote instead of sitting there being bored to tears.

Got groceries and came home to discover that the hubby had weed-whacked the yard, cut the grass and was busily chopping the last of the railroad ties we removed last year in half. We'd planned to take it to the dump over the next week or so but to get it into his truck it had to be cut in half. Wouldn't fit otherwise.

We don't have a proper saw that could cut it so he chopped it in half with an ax. And now is very, very ow. So we're off to hot tub to soak for a bit and then bed. Another exciting Friday night, yard work and early bedtime. *amused snort*

We're thinking (if he's not dying tomorrow) of going for a bike ride on the Centennial Trail not that far from home. It should be a nice day so why not? Other than our bikes really need a proper tune up, of course, but hey, it's not like we'd need to ride hard.

Goals for tomorrow are thus finish the current short story, go for a bike ride with the hubby and do some proofreading of the stories I've finished recently so that I can get them ready for publication.

Off to hot tub and bed--goodnight everyone!
