Well, I have to say, this has been one of the busiest holiday times I've had in a lot of years! [info]yagkyas was just as big as last year, coordinating about 40 new Generation Kill stories through the challege. I was so delighted to receive The Right Time, a wonderful Rudy/Pappy story by [livejournal.com profile] demonic_fish. There's just not enough Rudy/Pappy in the world, and it makes me so happy that this exists!

For [info]yagkyas, I wrote two stories: first, the Haven/Generation Kill crossover Family Confidence which posits Nate Fick as Nathan Wuornos' cousin (not that kind of cousin). Honestly, I wish it could have been more fleshed out, but I'm very glad it exists and it was fun to try and figure out.

Second, I wrote Not Only the Living, a Battlestar Galactica-Generation Kill fusion that makes Bravo Two the Colonial Marines on Galactica in the show. I was ecstatic to be able to write this--I'd wanted to do a BSG fusion for a long time, and to be able to do it for [info]yagkyas was the icing on the cake. I think it should make sense to folks who aren't too familiar with BSG--just think of Bravo Two as Space Marines--but I'm also proud, because I think it was a solid fusion that showed the potential of mashing the two fandoms together.

Because I'm ridiculous, I also modded the [info]dresdenficathon, the first time that challenge had been run since 2008. Dresden Fandom poses some interesting challenges--namely, it's not really a cohesive fandom in the least--but we got 18 awesome new stories out of it, which I encourage you to check out. I didn't receive a story for [info]dresdenficathon, but I did write two stories, both about Harry Dresden and Harry Raith. The first is Trade in Kind, which is about Thomas' proclivities not being as put-upon as the books suggest (or as Harry thinks); and Facing Down, about Thomas and Harry and the stupid things Morgan le Fay's sons do. It's been fun writing Dresden--I haven't written much, so this was a great opportunity to be more active in the fandom.

I did the Inception [info]dream_holiday exchange as well, writing To Continually Descend, a Penrose steps PWP featuring Arthur and Eames, which was cute, and a lot of fun. I received Of Postcards and Love Notes, which was a beautiful multimedia story about the correspondence between Arthur and Eames over the course of their relationship. It's just lovely. <3

Also, earlier this month, I did a couple of pinch hits for [info]happy_trekmas. First, Countermeasures, a Star Trek XI story with Jim Kirk and Bones McCoy and the challenges of the holidays. I also wrote The Vertical Expression of a Horizontal Desire, a Star Trek Voyager Paris/Kim story where Tom takes Harry dancing. That was a lot of fun to write--I hadn't thought about Voyager in years.

And then there was Yuletide. I contributed 6 stories to the main Yuletide challenge this year, which I will enumerate after the new year. I was so lucky to receive two stories this year, both of them for Haven. The first, Two Men, One Woman and a Christmas Tree, is adorable and hilarious, and the second, Proverbial Trees, is wonderfully slow and nuanced with an amazing Nathan perspective. Thank you, Yuletide santas. <3

And now, well. I'm going to watch 24/7 Flyers-Rangers and try to muddle through the last few days of the year. I think I'm going to go see the Portland Winterhawks play for New Year's Eve, and I'm pretty excited for the Winter Classic on Monday. (Have I mentioned I love hockey? I love hockey. Hockeyyyyyyyy.) Mostly, though, I just want to sleep--maybe even until the new year. <3, everyone, especially [livejournal.com profile] shoshannagold, my co-mod for [info]yagkyas this year, and to everyone who helped me get through the last month. It's been a trip.

Notes: This story came from [livejournal.com profile] loverly's prompt on [info]inception_kink for an Inception/Hawaii 5-0 crossover, "Arthur is Steve's brother." I genuinely thought, when I answered this prompt, that it was going to be an amusing one-off crossover that would take me an afternoon to write. 27,000 words later, I was clearly, flatly wrong.

Having been written on the kink meme, there were many--many!--tense shifts. I have tried to correct most of them, but I may not have gotten them all. Apologies for such errors. Thank you so much to all the folks that followed along and expressed their joy on the kink meme; and to [personal profile] pandarus for helping me to clean it up a bit for posting outside the meme. Special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] chaoticallyclev for the lovely banner. To all the people I pimped into Hawaii 5-0 through this story: you're welcome.

Additional notes included here; I suggest reading them after this story. This story may also be read on LJ, DW, and my archive. If you would prefer to download it as a pdf, click here.

They were working a simple bait-and-extract, pulling corporate espionage on one company and feeding it to a competitor, when Arthur got a phone call.  )

Notes as of April 3, 2011:

Okay, first of all, when I started this prompt I thought, "Ha, that's great, I can run that off in an hour, la la la!"

It didn't quite go like that. )

Thanks for playing along. <3

Notes: Art by [livejournal.com profile] min_taiwan for [info]i_reversebang. Thank you so much, Min! Your art is just lovely and this was a great challenge to do. Cobb/Saito, PG-13, Western AU. Apologies for anachronisms and indistinct historicism. Beta by E & J.

There's a fic commentary meme floating around! I've never done one of those, so, since I keep breaking all my rules for Inception fandom (I love you, Inception fandom!) I thought I might throw myself out there.

All my fic can be found under the will write for pancakes tag on LJ or DW, and also at my fic archive, which I think is actually easier to navigate overall and is pretty much comprehensive. Well, comprehensive for anything I wrote between probably 2004-2011.

And yes, I'll commentate on any Gen Kill fic too. And reef rat, if people are interested.

(not that I'm procrastinating on [info]i_reversebang, no siree.)

eta: I seriously cannot stop staring at this picture.

ngh. It doesn't help, either, that I just got to the Young Justice episode where Bane is introduced and I'm mentally overwriting the actor's voice with t-hard's.

dear the internet, by which I mean inception and hawaii 5-0 fandoms (but mostly inception):

I have somehow, today, managed to finished secretly a reef rat, the improbable kinda epic self-indulgence inception/hawaii 5-0 fusion where Arthur is Steve McGarrett's brother.

I have, honestly, no idea how this happened. How 27,000 words of this happened.

Anyway, if you're not a fan of the WIP, you can read it in all 50 mostly flat threaded parts here.

I'll repost it in full after beta. I have somehow managed to quell my regret at the flippant title. You can find a handful of author's notes here with handy dandy visual references.

thank you all for the comments and joy. love, me.

And NOW: on to [info]i_reversebang. APRIL 17TH, YOU ARE COMING AT ME SO FAST.

Also Remix is only three weeks away, and I have no idea what I'm going to remix. (This happens every year.)

Madre de dios, I have managed to pull out another section of secretly a reef rat. I was telling [livejournal.com profile] angelgazing today that, after the last update, I've reached the part in the story where I loathe everything and think it all sucks and why did I start doing this in the first place, which is pretty much the most bummer part of writing an inexplicably long story. If you can press through--and rest assured, I think I can, if I can just get my shit together--you can get back your mojo and finish the damn thing. But it's such a different experience doing this on the kink meme, as a WIP (what was I thinking), where people are actually tracking what you're doing and your lack of updates rather exposes your insecurities to your audience in progress.

It's weird, is what I'm saying, and I just so desperately want to finish.

Also, what is up, The Social Network fandom? I did not expect to enjoy you have as much as I have done in the last week. Eduardo Saverin, how are you real.

Though--with the RPS for TSN--it is fucking weird reading about Justin Timberlake in fanfiction again, as a veteran of popslash. And not just reading his character, but watching ten or eleven years of detailed, fandom-specific fanon/canon have little to no relevance to the major pairings and canon of TSN RPS. It's something of a mindfuck, for real. It almost--almost--makes me want to write TSN RPS just to stretch those atrophied popslash muscles once again.

Also, I kind of want to write a TSN/SGA fusion. I have no idea where that one came from.

So, this is a trailer for a video game called "Limbo" which made my ears prick up, because, well, obvious.

Inception fandom, this video game is like someone filmed someone's subconscious in the style of Inception, and that person's subconscious is a scary, panicky, place. This trailer is so eerie, doubly so because of the constructed canon Inception fandom works in. Like, I'm not saying this is Arthur's subconscious, or Eames' subconscious...but it's someone's subconscious, and it pushes a hundred different thoughts in my brain because of it.

It certainly doesn't hurt that there's that same feeling of anxiety and fear and also wonder in the trailer as you (might have) experienced in Dom Cobb's subconscious.

Tell me whose subconscious this is, fandom.
templemarker: (dear arthur I love you)
I spent the earlier part of this week reading [livejournal.com profile] skellerbvvt's fantastic WIP, Rule Ten. It's, eh, I guess it's R leaning towards NC-17 but there's no actual sex in it yet, despite being over 100 parts so far. There's adult themes, BDSM being a primary topic of discussion. It won't be to everyone's tastes--this skitters close to the line of daily lifestyle D/s, which is a pretty specific paradigm, but skeller handles it beautifully. And angstily. Did I mention the angst?

Anyway, in celebration of hitting 100 parts, skeller put up a party post, and I kind of flailed and then I wrote a comment fic, in the form of foot fetish. You can read it here, and I'm posting it below the cut for posterity.

because there's never enough fetish is the world, is there really? )

***

Let me say, Inception fandom is making me break all kinds of random self imposed guidelines I've more or less maintained for the decade plus I've been in fandom. Not reading WIPs, not posting WIPs, not posting in memes or comment threads, etc. etc. Clearly the power of Arthur and Eames is just that compelling.

Regarding secretly a reef rat, I am most assuredly working on it, but I've hit that point in a story where it's somehow more than quadrupled in length and I'm just slumped against my keyboard with a wretched scowl on my face wondering what on earth is supposed to happen next. I mean, I have some ideas, and I've given it a great deal of thought, but I just need to find a way to punch through the paper screen and get the words to page. I haven't abandoned! In fact, this bloody story is keeping me from writing anything else I've developed. But it's challenged, because I realized at some point whilst posting the 5000 word monster part on Friday that this is really a story about Steve much more than it is a story about Arthur or Eames, and I don't quite know what to do about that. Yet.

I've gone and gotten a twitter account, largely because @inceptiowips is an extremely convenient service and reading it through my RSS feeder was mundane. I'm not convinced that it's necessarily a long-term relationship, me and twitter, but we'll give it the ol' college try. Follow me here, if you like. Thus far I mainly seem to post links to the bits and bobs I've written and talk about Hawaii 5-0, so if that's your speed I welcome you.

And now, back to listlessly poking at the keyboard, hoping something will come out of it.

So, I'm not really used to the whole kink meme thing--the closest I've ever come is the Porn Battle, which doesn't involve threading or anonymity or captcha or whatever. But [info]inception_kink is so, like, inspiring? And awesome? So I've tried to figure it out--that's where comme une flèche and Conversation Piece came from, but they were one-shots and I didn't post 'em anon.

Anyway, this is my long-winded way of saying that I'm writing a WIP (first time I've ever posted a WIP!) on [info]inception_kink (first time I've ever posted more than a random comment!) that's a crossover between Inception and Hawaii 5-0 (so many firsts oh my god) from the prompt "Arthur is Steve's brother."

You can read it here: secretly a reef rat.

Rest assured I'll repost it once it's finished, not that I have a clue when that will be. And god I need a beta who's familiar with these fandoms.

In Hawaii 5-0 fandom, I also wrote Malama Pono, for Yuletide, which is a Chin backstory fic. And in Inception...I've almost finished a notebook with all the ideas for Inception I've had, but somehow I got suckered into writing 7000 words of punchy crossover fic to use all the witty lines I have in my head for Eames.

Whoops?

Notes: Fill for this prompt on [livejournal.com profile] inception_kink: Ariadne takes a trip to Arthur's subconscious, but all the women are in long skirts and dresses, and all the men have fedoras. Why are the forties alive in his subconscious? And is this actually what he wants?

The amount of time I spent researching this story is entirely disproportionate to its length. Sigh. Thanks to Tiriel for beta.

Ariadne sweeps her eyes over the space, and it's only when she enters further in and spots her scarf hanging limply from the chair that she sees Arthur, hooked up to the PASIV, tucked in the corner where she usually finds Dom.  )

Notes: So, New Year's Day I'm kind of busted, as happens on such a day, and my roommate and I are hanging out watching movies. I pop in Inception. Two and half hours later I'm burning up the internet trying to figure out what the hell just happened to my brain and it turns out the rest of fandom has built the most amazing fandom ever out of this movie. A week after that, I succumb to the kink meme and write this.

(I haven't written anything that wasn't for a challenge in over a year. For that alone, Inception, you are my joy.)

But still: INCEPTION. WHAT THE BLINKING FUCK.

Anyway, here goes. For this prompt on [personal profile] inception_kink: As much as I love dirty talk, I'd love to see Arthur and Eames having completely wordless sex. They speak with their bodies and understand each other perfectly. (moans and gasps etc. are ok though.)

Thank you to Tiriel for indulging me and my wanderings.

Eames slips in and out of Arthur's life like a memory, weeks or months or occasionally years between the times they have together.  )
