[personal profile] anatsuno has posted the remaining two parts from the long conversation about podfic I mentioned earlier this week! You can find parts two and three over at her journal. We'd love to know what you think--it was a lot of fun to talk about. And while [personal profile] dodificus chimed in as the first to listen all the way thorugh (and thus can claim the easter egg) I will happily honor another couple of them for folks who listen all the way through. (But don't skip to the end! That's cheating.)
templemarker: random: a phonograph (phonograph)
While I'd been aware (ha) of [community profile] pod_aware, I didn't really have any time to contribute to it in the course of last week. But after talking with [personal profile] anatsuno, we thought there was still enough there to have a conversation about podfic--and ended up with nearly three hours of impromptu podcast.

[personal profile] anatsuno took on the journeyman task of editing the thing down into parts, so this is the first of three. This part covers:
  • why we podfic, with a long digression into our beginnings as podficcer and about Sabotage, qlskdfgsldjfgh, and Calico’s amazing writing talent.
  • blanket permission;
  • some general reflections about podfic as an art form as well as a community of practice;
a few rambles here and there.

You can download the MP3 file (25MB) from Dropbox, or stream it here over at [personal profile] anatsuno's journal.

There may or may not be easter eggs at the end of the whole thing. You'll just have to listen and find out. :)

X & Y
a story by [livejournal.com profile] claire_kay
read by templemarker

Notes: I picked up a pinch hit in [info]pod_together 2011, collaborating with [livejournal.com profile] claire_kay on her Glee story. I experimented a little more than I usually do with bringing music into the podfic, because this was a story structured so explicitly around a specific album. I'd love feedback on how it worked (or didn't work) for you.

The story is rated PG-13, and pairings include Kurt Hummel/David Karofsky and Rachel Berry/Quinn Fabray. This is an alternate season three set-up and was originally posted here. The podfic is 23:39, 128kps and available to download as a MP3 or a M4B.

Notes: Thanks to Cofax for her blanket permission to record. This is a wonderful gen piece that came out of Remix one year and always stuck in my mind as a lovely, subtle window into what makes Teal'c tick. I hope I did it justice.

Story: Gen, Ellen Harvelle, 1596 words
Podfic: MP3, 9:03, 8.28MB
Download via mediafire; permanent link soon enough.

Notes: I experimented a little with tone in this story. Ellen, as a character, is someone who can effectively assess her area of operation from good training and years of practice; I tried to show her speaking voice as different from her internal narrative, which I think would be much more clipped and practical. Here's hoping it works for you. Thanks to [personal profile] cofax7 for blanket permission. I love this story.

Notes: I contributed a couple of short found-object type pieces to this very large and brilliant project of [livejournal.com profile] pandarus's. This was a J2 big bang from last year, very AU, long and plotty. But Fay can speak to it better than I can. She recorded all the main text, and I and an ensemble cast recorded the bits in between.

Story: Jared/Jensen, R, a whole lot of words.

Notes: [livejournal.com profile] pandarus and I were chatting about how much we love doing podfic, and hit on the idea of doing one together; so we tested our magnificent theory out on Fay's wonderful Leverage story, Sorted. I'm Eliot; she's Hardison; and it's a delight all around.

Story: PG, Eliot/Hardison, 1400 words.
Details: MP3, 3.9 MB, 9:03

This was originally posted to the generation_kill LJ community, but never made it to this journal or elsewhere. I was falling over in my chair laughing when I first read it. It's so charming and spot-on and funny, and I just had to read it out loud.

Original notes:

A couple weeks ago [livejournal.com profile] sparky77 wrote this brilliant story, and this week I was re-reading it and suddenly had to read it out loud. I just got back from Georgia, so my accent is really lazy, and you can probably hear me giggle, but this was fun as hell to read and I hope fun as hell to listen to.

Another repost, also from 2007. I was charmed by the notion of doing podfic as a birthday present, and [livejournal.com profile] destina's came up. I picked one of my favorite stories of hers, a delighful SPN RPS story that has Jensen being wooed by candy hearts. So I present a blast from the past:

Story: SPN RPS, Jared/Jensen, PG13, 3k words
Podfic: Available from the audiofic archive.
Podbook: Available from the audiofic archive courtesy [personal profile] cybel.

Original podfic notes:
I've been tooling around with podfic for awhile, on and off. This one was a lot of fun, but it's also rough in places, due to the poor quality of my laptop microphone and the new software I was using. It blurps in one place I couldn't fix, and you can hear the unpleasant whir of my laptop fan. It brings the sound quality down some, so sorry about that.

The lead-in and -out track is "60B" by Nancy Wilson, which is from the Elizabethtown soundtrack and a lovely piece of music. Also, there are places where I go a bit Southern in the reading. It's not my fault! It's the boys being Texan!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

Happy previous (and future!) birthdays, [livejournal.com profile] destina!

For my beautiful wonderful favoritest [personal profile] minim_calibre's Jesus birthday a couple years ago, I secretly undertook a project of recording and compiling several of her stories into what I eventually called "The Portable Minim Cablibre." It was a lot of fun to do, back in mumbletymumble when podcasts and their fannish outcropping, podfics, were really getting going.

I'm reposting it here for posterity, and also for anyone who might want to listen to Minim's wonderful lexicon of stories.

Hello fandom! Hello folks who have friended me recently! It is very nice if slightly baffling to see you here!

I have some unfortunate, challenging health problems (I totally just typed that as "hell problems" which seems somehow more accurate) which can and does make creativity and the desire to participate in, you know, life, pretty much nonexistent. But I'm slowly inching my way back to a more hopeful status quo! Which means doing things that make me (and hopefully ya'll) happy!

Today, and for the last, like, ten days, my happy place has been [livejournal.com profile] lazulisong's story Graduate Vulcan for Fun and Profit, which is awesome and hilarious and compassionate and intelligent and on the whole wonderful. It is a love song to the city of Portland, which I have a vested interest in; it combines an understanding of TOS with a deft hand for Trek XI, and has been making me giggle and clutch my heart in joy for a week and a half. I couldn't recommend it enough.

So I did what I do when I love a story so much that I can hear the voices in my own head: I recorded it as podfic. I'm particularly proud of this one, and I really hope you enjoy it.

I can figure out a way to have it stream from this post, too, if people are interested.

Also, I would really love feedback on this! Podfic usually has a really low comment ratio, and that's totally cool, but I'd very much like to know what people thought!

[livejournal.com profile] affectingly wrote the gorgeous Kirk/McCoy story, These Kids, They Lost Their Graces, which I read on Sunday and immediately had to do something about. So I did this podfic of it.

(Note: My microphone couldn't handle Bones McCoy's strident tones, so you might not want your speaker to be set high while listening to this. Sorry about that.)
